The Regional Activity Centre for Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP/RAC) is a centre for international cooperation with Mediterranean countries on development and innovation in the production sector and civil society, based on more sustainable consumption and production models. The centre belongs to the Mediterranean Action Plan (UN Environment/MAP), the programme of UN Environment established to support the 21 member countries of the Barcelona Convention.
Through its dynamic work program, the Centre promotes: resource efficiency in production processes; pollution prevention and waste management as factors of competitiveness; entrepreneurial initiatives that contribute to a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle for citizens; green public procurement; the promotion of green jobs; among other related activities.
SCP/RAC coordinates a Mediterranean network of businesses, civil society organisations, public agencies, entrepreneurs and financing institutions, with the goal of promoting the design, development and scaling of eco-design and eco-innovation projects. Ultimately, this work contributes to the reduction of the environmental impact of industry and consumption, the efficient use of natural resources, job creation, and the design of new products to meet societal needs.
Taking into consideration the criteria established by the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (approved by the United Nations General Assembly in September 2015), and also the New Urban Agenda that emerged from the 3rd United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development (Habitat III) in 2016, the cities of the future must be inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable. Sustainable patterns of production and consumption contribute directly to the sustainability of metropolises, and indirectly to the other three sustainable city criteria above. SCP/RAC is therefore an enthusiastic supporter and promoter of sustainable urban development, now and in the future.
